Odds are the topsoil on your lot was not kept for your lawn and landscape when your home was built. The photos below are not meant to point fingers, but they depict the stark reality of what happens when subdivisions are built and lots are developed.

The topsoil is scraped off, lost or buried to ensure that streets, sidewalks and foundations are constructed on solid compacted materials. Heavy clay, gravel and crushed limestone create great places to build structures but are terrible areas for turf and landscape plantings.

For over 35 years, we have witnessed the same conditions shown in these photos – heavily compacted clay soil with all sorts of foreign rock and gravel debris buried throughout. This is not a good recipe for establishing lawn and landscape plants!
