While April gave us a variety of weather conditions including rain, snow, wind and even a little sun, crabapple tree flowering did not seem to be affected. Many of the older varieties of crabapples have spectacular flowering displays. Unfortunately, many of these older varieties are also susceptible to apple scab fungus.
If you have crabapple trees that are regularly defoliated by mid-August, the cause may be apple scab fungus. Preventative fungicide treatments in the spring can help retain the leaves of your crabapples throughout the growing season.
