Do not scalp your lawn
No, Mother Nature does not plant crabgrass in straight lines! But…if you mow or trim incorrectly in July and August, sunlight will break down our crabgrass pre-emergent barrier faster.
Last month, we talked about poor vertical string trimming. This month, we are showing what happens if scalping occurs when the tractor tires ride on the curb or sidewalk. The center cut line did not scalp the lawn and therefore crabgrass did not germinate in these areas.
An Unusual Summer Season in the Miami Valley
The effects of global warming sure didn’t show themselves in the Miami Valley this summer:
- June: Eight to ten inches of rain depending on where you live.
- July: Third lowest average monthly temperatures on record.
- August: So far so good. While the rain showers have been hit or miss, these cooler nights have everyone thinking that fall is in the air.
We are now officially entering seed season – August 15 through September 30. If you are currently scheduled for fall core aeration, please consider over seeding at the same time.
